Unfortunately in May 2024, I was arrested while conducting an interview in Sfax, Tunisia, due to my journalistic work about migration and EU-Tunisia cooperation. Though the Tunisian authorities never articulated suspicion or any crime, nor filed any formal charges, I was interrogated for three days and held with an illegal travel ban for another seven months.
When I finally managed to leave Tunisia shortly before the start of 2025, I decided to write about it on a Substack. The Substack is titled "The School of Tunisia," referencing an investigator with the Tunisian National Guard who bid me welcome with those words at the end of a long interrogation. The School of Tunisia chronicles my seven months of arbitrary detainment in Tunisia in candid detail.
It's long, but at least it's free. And some people have even described it as a bit of a page turner.
